*Many students with Autism report that they experience "sensory overload." These students should have a quiet space available to them to work on things when classroom activities get noisy.
* Communication can be a struggle for those with Autism. When planning activities, teachers should create small groups and place students that have Autism with peers that they are comfortable with. * Give information in more than one way. * Speak slowly and repeat instructions for a student with Autism as much as necessary. Students with Autism may become distracted during lessons, so repetition is key and writing out instructions on the board. * Allow extra time for students to respond to directions because sometimes students with autism need extra time to process information. |
* Reduce the amount of problems that the student must complete. Students with autism can take a while to process information.
* Offer alternate activities. Some activities in class may be "high-sensory" and students with autism may experience overload. |
