Simulation Steps:
1. Create the following notecards:
A: Teacher Role: Sit at your desk and "correct papers." You can doodle during this time. When students C & D ask you questions, respond with "yes", but when student B asks you a question, pretend you don't hear it.
B: Student with Rett Syndrome Role: You are not allowed to leave your desk or move your arms. Ask the teacher if you can get a drink of water. A little while later ask the teacher if you can go to the bathroom.
C: Student without disorder Role: Play rock, paper, scissors with Student D. After playing best two out of three, ask the teacher if you can go to the bathroom. When she says yes, walk quickly out of the room and then back in. Avoid Student B.
D: Student without disorder Role: Play rock, paper, scissors with Student C. When the student returns from getting a drink ask the teacher if you can go to the bathroom. When she says yes, walk quickly in and out of the room. Avoid Student B.
2. Separate the students into groups of 4 and give them their roles. Tell the students to follow their directions on their cards, but keep the instructions to themselves. The activity should take about 10-15 minutes.
3. When the groups have finished role playing, ask them to guess what each other's roles were and discuss the activity. Allow the groups to share out what they thought or learned from the activity.
4. Play the following video for the class that helps explain what Rett Syndrome is:
