Rett Syndrome Characteristics
Most parents aren't aware that their child has Rett Syndrome until she/he is somewhere from 6-18 months old. Children with the disorder usually develop at a normal rate during early infancy, but then experience a decrease in development (NIH, 2009). As Rett Syndrome progresses most children experience the following:
.) loss of purposeful use of hands
.) problems walking
.) intellectual disability
.) seizures
.) inability to speak
.) breathing difficulties
.) compulsive hand movements (wringing/washing)
.) diminished eye contact
.) sleep problems
.) teeth grinding/difficulty chewing
